Circuit Breaker

Grading capacitors used in circuit breakers allow the high voltage to be distributed uniformly in the interrupting chambers. Years of experience and know-how in the production of high voltage capacitors makes them suitable for all types of applications in the generation, transportation and distribution of electrical energy. GIS circuit breakers for tough environments with extreme temperature variations, dust, pollution or confined space use grading capacitors. Coupling capacitors for special applications are also available for this type of switchgear substation and transmission.

In air-insulated switchgears (AIS), grading capacitors ensure a uniform distribution of the voltage across the breaking chambers of the live tank circuit breaker. Grading capacitors for AIS are compliant with standard IEC 62146-1. They are available with a porcelain or a composite insulator. All standard porcelains are equipped with single or alternating long-short sheds and are in full compliance with IEC 60815. Maxwell standard fixing is independent of the flange diameter. It ensures the interchangeability with former CONDIS® capacitors and the compatibility with the attachment of composite insulators. Other fixing methods are available on request.

The design of high-voltage grading capacitors for AIS is usually customer-specific. CONDIS® technology offers a high flexibility and will therefore allow for a large customization to meet specific circuit breaker mechanical and electrical needs.

In a recent addition to the AIS grading capacitor product range, «Arctic» capacitors have been designed for application in the most severe environmental conditions, supporting extreme temperatures down to -60° Celsius. Please find hereunder more products features.

Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) circuit breakers for tough environments with extreme conditions (temperature variations, dust, pollution or confined space) use grading capacitors to ensure a uniform distribution of the voltage across the breaking chambers.

CONDIS® GIS capacitors have a sophisticated design— the electrical insulation is made by a vacuum impregnated epoxy resin tube with a smooth external surface. This design guarantees mechanical robustness and oil- and gas-tightness within a high pressurized environment in a large, specified temperature range. Our capacitors are partial-discharge-free and they have a proven record of high performance and reliability with years of in-field operation.

High-voltage GIS capacitors are compliant to the IEC62146-1 standard ; they can be used in various types of gas-insulated switchgears, and their design is therefore customer-specific. Independent of the application, the flanges, tubes, and field distribution will remain unchanged along the insulator.

Maxwell CONDIS®’ technology offers a high flexibility and will therefore allow for a large customization to meet specific circuit breaker mechanical and electrical needs. The new Thin Winding concept further enhances the possibility for a reduced length for low capacitance value. In a recent addition to the GIS product range, «Arctic» capacitors have been designed for applications in the most severe environmental conditions, supporting extreme temperatures down to -60° Celsius. TRV Capacitors for Dead Tank Circuit Breaker

Grading Capacitor AIS

In air-insulated switchgears (AIS), transient recovery voltage (TRV) capacitors are installed phase-to-ground. They decrease the oscillation frequency and the rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV) of TRV, which occurs during initiation or interruption of current flow. TRV capacitors are thus installed to increase breaking power of the circuit breaker.

TRV capacitors for AIS are available with a porcelain or a composite insulator. All standard porcelains are equipped with single or alternating long-short sheds and are in full compliance with IEC 60815.

CONDIS® standard fixing is independent of the flange diameter. It ensures the interchangeability with former CONDIS® capacitors and the compatibility with the attachment of composite insulators. Other fixing methods are available on request.

The design of high-voltage TRV capacitors for AIS application is usually customer-specific. Maxwell CONDIS® technology offers a high flexibility and will therefore allow for a large customization to meet specific circuit breaker mechanical and electrical needs.
